Just like at the Logies, the real fun happens at the TV Fugly Awards after-party. This year was no exception.

We can’t say too much but we can tell you Todd McKenney was the special guest, making an appearance as our celebrity bartender. Then after 9pm, Grant Denyer got on stage to do some blue material. The little guy really does have some great off colour Logies jokes.

It was a special night.

It was a memorable ceremony, a very fugly production we’re sure voters would be proud. There will be photos and video up shortly.

But what is more important is that the 2008 winners have been revealed. Thanks to all to all voters for freely imparting their knowledge of all things bad tv. Your quality judgements when selecting these people and shows continues to be impeccable.

When internet chatting with one of our fugly friends forever who attend the recent MTV Awards, we asked how we could ensure our awards ceremony also sucked hardcore? The response, try way too hard and have no soul - recipe for a crap event.

ABC TV snub The Fuglies

We’ve given ABC Managing Director Mark Scott, head of television Kim Dalton and the ABC TV publicity department 9 days since our nominees were announced to get a tasteless and pathetic or even just a distasteful promo campaign for their nominees in the 2008 Fugly Awards broadcast on the telly and put online for the youth of Australia to see.

They did it for the Logies…

…but have done nothing for The Fuglies.

Isn’t it in their charter for the ABC’s coverage to be fair and balanced, showing both sides of the story? Technically that’s just a policy for journalism but we here on the Fugly Lounge think it is an example of extremely poor cross-promotional standards which are creeping into the public broadcaster. We’re disappointed.

And ABC TV look like they have the perfect promotional strategy for us. Considering we’ve survived for 7 years with little more comical substance than a faux swear word, their unfunny and boorish attempts at satire makes them the perfect marketing team for these awards.

Also. We’ve been handing out our good gongs to ABC shows and people right from the start.

It’s like the ABC doesn’t care about these awards. But more importantly they don’t care if Myf, Adam, Andrew, Chas, Alan Spicks & Specks and The Librarians get a pat on the back from voters that care about good tv.

Attention: Mark Scott, Kim Dalton and ABC TV Publicity, we are going to do what Stephen Colbert would do and put you ‘On Notice’. If we don’t have a ABC/Fuglies promo uploaded onto The Youtube as well as slotted right between the the news at 7pm and the 7:30 Report we will write a letter to the Friends of the ABC. That’s right. We are willing to unleash hell. We know that you’ll do the right thing.

First winner announced

It’s 3:38am and we’ve just finished sorting then counting the last 24 hours of nominations and are now putting the top nominees into our survey software for the proper vote which will be starting later this morning.

Now that all the hard work has done we can say that there is one category we can already declare a winner in and it’s the award for the Community TV Show You Want on Free-to-Air TV. In horse racing parlance the show which won, won only after every other runner was scratched from the race. Out of the 5000+ nominations for the 2008 Fuglies only 35 were entered for this category and only one show received more than two votes. Still, the congratulations go to a show which used to be on Melbourne’s Channel 31, Fishcam.

Yes, a show that is no longer even on community telly which was just the images captured by a camera pointed at a fish tank has been given the gong. I’m quite sure commercial network executives will be knocking on the producer’s door later today now that it has been recognised at The Fuglies. It will probably be brought out of hiatus and be back onto our screens within the week. Well done voters. You have again proved that your superior televisual judgement combined with online democracy is a wonderful mix.

April 14th
Call for nominations in categories the Logies keep on forgetting to include.

April 23rd
Vote on the nominees whom the brilliant minds of our voters have determined worthy of recognition in our special way.

May 2nd
Winners announced at a ~~glamorous~~ ceremony.

We’re quite sure voters and gamblers alike will be adding these dates to their diaries and online to do list applications.

The Logies have gone to all this effort of appearing to look legitimate/tolerable with things like allowing anyone to vote, announcing the ceremony will be sans host and putting up a whole group of ABC nominees in the running for a gong.

So we guess people are now wondering how The Fuglies will up our game to remain the new hotness in the Australian Television Awards Industry. Well, three days out and we the organisers are not really sure. We think our usual half arsed effort of creating some new categories will be enough.

As well as our usual enthusiastic vitriol aimed at bad shows and stars we will have an award for ‘TV Network Frenemies’, ‘Australia’s Best TV Viewer’ and ‘Community TV Show You Want on Free-to-Air TV’.

If anyone else has any better ideas (you’d have to be lazier and more mediocre than us for them to be much worse than these) then comment below or email your suggestions to awards [at] fugly.com.au and they will most likely be included as a category for nominations in 2008.
