And the winners are…Gladiators, Kyle, Anna, Kyle, and Kyle & Rove.

May 2, 2008 (Melbourne, VIC) Seven Network’s recently returned high profile show Gladiators has been awarded the major gong in the TV Fugly Awards. Now in its 7th year, the internet based survey received more than 15,000 nominations and votes which decided what were the worst shows and stars on Australian television from the last 12 months.

Kyle Sandilands from Network Ten’s Big Brother and Australian Idol franchises has for the second year in a row got the gong for Worst Male TV Personality, comfortably ahead of 2006 winner Daryl Somers by almost 30% of the vote. Sandilands also beat Corey Worthington for ‘The Eddie’ an award for the Most Overexposed TV Personality as well as being named part of Australia’s TV Network Frenemies with Rove McManus after his outburst on his Sydney radio show attacking McManus.

“Kyle is almost the new Eddie McGuire when it come to The Fuglies. We might have to name a category after him next year like we did with Eddie to exclude Kyle from taking over and ruining these celebrated awards.” said The Fuglies organisers.

In other categories, Today Tonight’s Anna Coren narrowly beat last year’s winner Jackie O to claim the title of Australia’s Worst Female TV Personality and for the third time, Channel Nine’s NRL commentator Phil Gould was named the Most Biased Sporting Commentator.

Corey Worthington did score an award by association in the category for Most Sensational Current Affairs Story where voters indicated that his clash with A Current Affair host Leila Mckinnon was the least news worthy story of the year.

As well as the categories that highlight the “worst of the worst” The Fuglies also ask viewers to nominate shows and people they feel are not getting the pat on the back they deserve. Myf Warhurst has again won Most Spankable Female TV Personality after a close race with Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Hamish Blake was this year named the Spunkiest Male TV Personality. Voters gave comedian Shaun Micallef and his Newstopia show on SBS the awards for Most Under Acknowledged TV Personality and Show.

Winners of this year’s TV Fugly Awards were formally announced in a three minute “ceremony”. The event included all the ingredients of an awful awards show: lame host, milk crates for a stage, temporary seating for all the nominees, water instead of champagne, shameless plugs and product placements as well as The Fuglies tradition of having a brown carpet instead of a red one and recipients receiving just a paper certificate to commemorate the notoriety.
